Spring has finally sprung! So has gasoline!

April 26th, 2006

Spring has finally sprung here at the top of the Sierra Nevadas! I am about to come out of hibernation and begin enjoying the weather.

How much is gas in your area? In our area it is $3.16 per gallon for regular unleaded. I am willing to bet that bicycles and walking will become the means of weekend entertainment for the family this summer. Not only is the gas prices hurting the consumer, but those businesses that rely on tourism such as our national parks, the mom and pop gift shops, restaurants and the like will suffer as driving habits begin to change. For us to travel to Yosemite would be a budget killer with estimates of gas reaching $4.00 per gallon by the summer. Especially since Yosemite is not real near to a big airport, a car is a must. An economy car doesn’t work for us since we have a big family, so you know what we are doing this summer, staying local.

Have a great day,

Steve

  • Steve, I live across the street from a gas station so I guess I’m one to fill you in on how gas prices are here. In Kentucky, we’re not far behind, with regular gas $2.78 a gallon. At least that’s what it was this morning.

By the way, great job on the podcast! Keep ‘em coming!

  • We just hit $2.99/gallon near me in central Mass. I’m glad we just bought patio furniture, because it looks like we’re going to be spending our summer vacation in the backyard this year…

  • I thought it was $3.30, but Dawn saw the current price at $3.16. Crazy!

  • I guess I’m going to be the voice of controversy! ;)

I know petrol (sorry ‘gas’! :) ) prices matter more in a bigger country, of course, but the fact is your prices are a lot better than Europe, and Britain is the worst in Europe- we pay 80% tax on petrol. As much as 90p/$1.60 a litre some places- not sure what that is in gallons!

BUT we have to do something about the fuel crisis- if paying more means people use less of the earth’s resources, it may be what has to happen. We could run out of petroleum in my lifetime…eeek!

Maybe the real problem is people aren’t being paid enough- and Bush only gives tax cuts to his richest friends! xx

  • OR…maybe the problem is the fat cats & super-rich stockholders are doing everyone else out of their hard-earned! x

  • Yes, the U.S. would have a fit if we paid what you folks over the pond pay. However, the price evens out when you consider how far people have to drive in most parts of the U.S. compared to those in Europe. Also, the vehicles that the U.S. drives tend to be bigger than those in Europe, thus the bigger consumption.

Personally I think the oil industry uses any world excuse to up the cost per barrel, thus the big profits that they are all reporting after the last quarter.
